For nearly four decades, Katherine Kelly Lang has been a household name, captivating audiences with her portrayal of Brooke Logan on The Bold and the Beautiful. Her journey in Hollywood is a testament to resilience, passion, and constant reinvention. Beyond the cameras, Katherine has embraced numerous ventures, from endurance sports to philanthropy, while balancing a life dedicated to wellness and self-care.
In this exclusive interview for Grazia Sweden, she opens up about her iconic role, evolving opportunities for women in entertainment, her love for fashion, and the importance of physical and mental well-being.

Grazia Sweden: Your character, Brooke Logan, has experienced numerous transformations over the years. How have these evolutions influenced your personal growth, and in what ways have you infused aspects of your own personality into Brooke?
Katherine Kelly Lang: Brooke has evolved a lot over the 37 years I’ve been playing her. When she first started out, she was still living at home in the San Fernando Valley with her mother and siblings, dating a police detective, and working for her mother’s catering company. She became a member of the Forrester family when she married Eric. Then she actually saved the company as a chemist, creating a fabric that revolutionized the fashion industry. Now she’s a mother, grandmother, and Co-CEO of the family business.

Brooke is a character I play, but she’s totally separate from me, so I don’t think her evolutions influenced my personal growth. Brooke is a creation of the writers, and I simply interpret their scripts. However, I do believe the way they write the characters is based on the energy an actor gives during their performances. When I step on stage, I become her, and when they say “cut,” I am instantly myself again.
GS: Balancing a demanding acting career with personal life is no small feat. Can you share some of the strategies you’ve employed to maintain this equilibrium?
KKL: It’s very simple actually. To have long-term balance and health, you must actively have the discipline and will to take care of yourself. Eating right, sleeping enough, taking care of your emotional and social needs. Having a healthy routine full of good things and good people who give you energy. It takes a lot of effort to film year-round and shoot as many episodes as we do every year.

GS: Having grown up in a family with a rich entertainment legacy, how did your upbringing influence your career choices?
KKL: I lived in Southern California, so I was in the middle of the entertainment industry. My grandfather was an Academy Award-winning cinematographer, and my parents were actors. It wasn’t something far away from my background or only something I wished for in my head. I saw the reality of it. My parents gave me the freedom to choose what I wanted to do. At first, I wanted to be an athlete, but when I visited a movie set once, that’s when I started to think maybe this was for me.
GS: Your journey in entertainment has spanned several decades. How do you perceive the evolution of roles and opportunities for women in Hollywood?
KKL: There has been a lot of evolution. First of all, there are a lot more opportunities for a woman’s career to span her whole lifetime. Also, women are starting to be taken seriously as directors, producers, and studio executives. I think it’s wonderful, and I’ve started venturing into the role of producer myself in the last few years.

GS: Beyond acting, you’ve explored endurance sports like triathlons. How have these pursuits impacted your approach to life?
KKL: My father was an Olympic ski jumper, and I was always into riding horses when I was young. At first, I thought I wanted to be a jockey, but I went into acting. I have stayed physically active. When I’m not on set, a lot of the time, you’ll find me exercising or doing something physical out in nature. I’ve done 50 and 100-mile cross-country horse racing and triathlons.
Now I’m focusing on strength training to keep my bones strong. Pushing your body to its limits is like meditation. How are you supposed to know how to live if you don’t even know what you’re physically capable of? The more you push your body, the healthier and stronger it gets. You need physical stamina to get through long days of shooting.

GS: The fashion industry has seen significant shifts over the years. How do you view the relationship between fashion and television today?
KKL: Fashion ebbs and flows, and that’s what makes it exciting. Over the years, it’s seemed like fashion tries to flirt with ways to show more and more skin. But that isn’t what I’m into, although I’m certainly not afraid to put on a bathing suit for a photo shoot.
Fashion flatters a person’s body, and that is definitely part of the allure of Hollywood movies and television series. I love glamour and haute couture, and it’s fun to play the part of a strong woman in the fashion industry. I get to play dress-up almost every day. When I’m not on set or at a red carpet, however, you’ll usually find me in a bohemian chic outfit—jeans, a tee, or a comfy top with sandals. I’m a California girl at heart.

GS: In recent years, there’s been a growing emphasis on mental health in the entertainment industry. How do you prioritize your own well-being?
KKL: You must surround yourself with positive people who give you energy and who are rooting for you to succeed. Self-care is a big part of it. Because if you don’t value yourself enough to take good care of you, who else is going to do it?
Time alone, time in nature, and sometimes meditation have been essential for me. Time with loved ones and close friends nurtures your soul.
GS: With digital media and streaming platforms on the rise, how do you see the future of daytime television?
KKL: Daytime dramas are merging well with streaming platforms. They are daily, and they keep subscribers and members coming back! There will always be terrestrial broadcast television. It will be interesting to see how technology evolves, but good content will always succeed, no matter the platform.

GS: Philanthropy plays a significant role in the lives of public figures. Are there particular causes you’re passionate about?
KKL: I’ve worked with Cancer Support Community for many years now. It’s a wonderful organization that helps people and families affected by cancer navigate their cancer journey.
GS: Reflecting on your career, what legacy do you hope to leave in the entertainment industry?
KKL: I hope people are moved, entertained, and delighted by my work. We do what we do for the viewers, and their attention is our greatest reward. Maybe we can provide them with some escape from the stressors and pressures of daily life—taking them into a fantasy world and giving them a little relief from the reality of life.
